You can use a map chart to compare values and show categories across geographical regions. Use it when you have geographical regions in your data, like countries/regions, states, counties or postal codes.

Map charts have gotten even easier with geography data types. Simply input a list of geographic values, such as country, state, county, city, postal code, and so on, then select your list and go to the Data tab > Data Types > Geography. Excel will automatically convert your data to a geography data type, and will include properties relevant to that data that you can display in a map chart. In the following example, we've converted a list of countries to geography data types, then selected the Tax revenue (%) field from the Add Column control to use in our map.

I am thrilled to offer you these free tools. I have found them very helpful, but if you feel you might need something more than the free tools I've mentioned; you may be on the proactive side of a network optimization. In that case, our eBook on the importance of your design could help you in your research, Supply Chain Network Design. In it, you'll get an in-depth look at how our optimization team works through a project with our case study. At either rate, would love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

ZIP code mapping is a method of analyzing data in relation to ZIP codes. It is usually used in comparison analysis and territory definition. As the most granular boundary dataset, it allows a more exact analysis of business data.

You're the expert on your data and business, but to get your ZIP code mapping project completed you'll need some support. That's why our eSpatial team includes geographic information system (GIS) qualified mapping experts who work with you. They provide expertise in both mapping and data integration for on-boarding and through your time using eSpatial.

Color-coded ZIP code maps use a range of colors to illustrate various ranges of data. Each color represents a simple value. For example each individual ZIP code can be assigned a unique color based on a value. You can also save a palette of color styles as templates. This is great when you want to create similar maps on a regular basis. You can then easily reuse these styles as you update and reload new versions of your data. Learn how to create your own color-coded ZIP code maps with our quick how-to guide.

A color-coded ZIP code map is a map that has different colorized ZIP code areas where each color represents a simple value. For example, each ZIP code could be differentiated and highlighted by an individual color. This makes it easy to see the different independent ZIP codes (their "value") and their geographic boundaries.

Alternatively, you could group a number of ZIP codes by color, to represent the same or similar values. An example of this would be a service coverage map where ZIP code regions that are covered by a service team in green versus not covered in red.

eSpatial allows you to upload Excel data and automatically attach it ("link to boundaries") to each colorized ZIP code. This allows values to be color coded on the map (e.g., covered or not covered) but can also attach additional spreadsheet data to a geographic boundary. In the service coverage map, if a ZIP is selected, an information box could open, revealing additional data such as number of customers, number of service engineers.

eSpatial makes it easy to create a color-coded ZIP code map and also gives you the flexibility to save that map and use it repeatedly for different analyses. In the case of the service coverage map, for example, you could plot the number of competitors in each region.

eSpatial allows you to balance your ZIP code territories in terms of certain data such as demographics or values. This will help identify whether the distribution of territories is balanced and fair. To get started, sign up for a free trial or log in to your eSpatial account and open the Territory Builder by clicking the button on the top right of your screen.

A ZIP code heat map is a regional heat map. It uses graded differences in shading or color in order to indicate the aggregate or average values of some property or quantity in particular areas. For instance, the aggregate value or volume of sales for each ZIP code or sales territory is color coded into a number of ranges, with each color representing a value range. Learn how to create your own regional heat map in our quick and easy how-to guide.

You can not only identify and analyze the points that lie within your ZIP code boundaries, but you can also identify the data points that lie outside your boundaries. This helps you spot gaps in your coverage.

In the United States of America a zipcode is five or nine numbers that are added to a postal address to assist the sorting of mail. There are currently about 43,000 zipcode. This tool can also find the postal code of many other countries. Postal codes vary from one country to another but they are usually a group of numbers between 3 and 10 digits long. In some countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada, postal code are comprised of number and letters.

The USPS does not maintain an official ZIP Code map. The Census Bureau and many other commercial services will interpolate the data to create polygons to represent the approximate area covered by a ZIP code, but none of these maps are official or entirely accurate. Please see for a good discussion of the issues of mapping ZIP Codes.

HERE (the company that now includes data products that were formerly branded as "Navteq") maintains several versions of postal code data. The version distributed by MassGIS is an extract of HERE's nationwide "Un-generalized, without water holes, with County" layer. This dataset displays water features on coastlines but does not include water holes, and includes ZIP Code boundaries split at County boundaries. The HERE Postal Code Boundaries product does not have void areas in postal coverage, even if such non-delivery areas exist in reality (such as a remote mountainous area). This is by design, for aesthetic purposes and to ensure that a postal code is assigned to all geographic areas.

The Census Bureau uses tabulation blocks as the basis for defining each ZCTA. Tabulation blocks are assigned to a ZCTA based on the most frequently occurring ZIP Code for the addresses contained within that block. The most frequently occurring ZIP Code also becomes the five-digit numeric code of the ZCTA. These codes may contain leading zeros.
