Since we know that Macworld readers are fine, upstanding citizens of the internet who would never countenance such behaviour, we show you how you can still download torrents on your iPad, all without needing to jailbreak it.
It should be noted before we begin that due to the nature of torrents, and their dependency on users to supply the files, it can be a very hit-or-miss experience. So put on the kettle and maybe grab a good book, as your iPad might be busy for a while.
Ish Downloads Torrent
The principle is that files are broken down into smaller parts and downloaded simultaneously from several sources. These sources are comprised of users who host the files on their PCs, as well as traditional online servers. The practical upshot of all this is that the burden of supplying files is spread out, usually meaning downloads are quicker or at least remain available should one of the servers go down.
The problem arises with the kind of content people share. Musicians, independent film makers, software developers, authors, podcasters and other creators have often used torrenting to legitimately distribute their work. But ripped files of the latest Hollywood blockbusters and chart-topping albums also frequently appear.
BitTorque, the native BlackBerry 10 torrent downloader hasn't been available since February 2013, but thanks to some work put in by xsacha the app has now arisen from the dead. The app appeared on BlackBerry World but was quickly removed, thought to be never seen again. The developers tried to get BlackBerry to reapprove the app but their attempts seemingly failed and they gave up trying.
Now though, you can download the full app, based on the open source Transmission software that downloads torrents directly onto your device, in all its original glory with all the features as they were when it was pulled. Surprisingly, it even looks (and works) great on the BlackBerry Passport, a device not even available at that time.
By default, transmission creates a user and a group transmission, with its home files at /var/lib/transmission/, and runs as this "user". This is a security precaution, so transmission, and its downloads, have no access to files outside of /var/lib/transmission/. Configuration, operation, and access to downloads needs to be done with "root" privileges (e.g. by using sudo).
Now /mnt/data/torrents will be accessible for the system user facade and for the transmission group to which the transmission user belongs. Making the target directory world read/writable is highly discouraged (i.e. do not chmod the directory to 777). Instead, give individual users/groups appropriate permissions to the appropriate directories.
If you want to Automatically add .torrent files from a folder, but you find that the watch-dir and watch-dir-enabled options set in the configuration file do not work, you can start the transmission daemon with the flag -c /path/to/watch/dir.
There are tons of illegal torrent sites but only a handful of the legal ones. Some of these rare species are Public Domain Torrents, Internet Archives, and Legit Torrents. You can find more by doing a simple research in Safari. Some desktop app developers also make their software available via torrent, even though you might not want to download the desktop app to your iPhone.
Both the torrent file and the magnet link serve the same purpose which is to connect the torrent client to the seeders who provide chunks of the files that you want. For iPhone users, the magnet link method is easier, but using torrent files is also possible.
I've been using PIA for years with no issues but for whatever reason today i opened qbitorrent and was getting absolutely ATROCIOUS download speeds (kilobits). (I have a 400-450 ish megabit connection through spectrum) i ran speed test through the vpn and was getting like 2 megabit on a good run. I then closed qbitrorrent. reloaded speedtest through the vpn. ran it again. and got 300 megabit+. i then opened qbittorrent again reloaded speed test and once again got terrible speeds. tested in this fashion a few more times and got fairly consistent results. has anyone else had an issue like this? Did PIA start throttling people for torrenting? I tried asking this same question on reddit but it got immediately removed. I didnt see a rules section on the pia sub so as far as i know i didnt break any rules and i got no indication as to why it was removed. it's been ages since i set everything up in qbittorrent i dont remember what all i did. if i recall correctly i just tweaked the port number and number of allowed simultaneous uploads and downloads and stuff. i do know its been working fine for years and suddenly its not. i know i did have stuff in queue but it wasnt even close to enough usage to saturate my normal connection for upload or download. (and by that i mean not enough to saturate my normal spectrum connection as well as the normal speeds i get through the vpn. usually get between 150-350 Megabit through the vpn. and the slow speeds happened only when the qbittorrent client was open. when i closed it and ran speed test through the vpn with qbitterrent closed it went back to normal 300+ megabit) had maybe 8 things uploading/downloading at a time all of which were running at around 200 kilobits ish or less (less for most of them) each down and like 10-40 kilobits up. i did try a number of different vpn servers both with and without port forwarding. and did make sure that on the port forwarded servers it was set to the forwarded port in qbittorrent. (my usual that id been using has been the same for a long time and is port 28482) and i've been running a split tunnel where qbittorrent and chrome go through the vpn and everything else goes through the normal internet connection. i also ran speedtest without the vpn to ensure it wasnt spectrum screwing me and the speeds were the normal 450 ish megabit. i will try downloading the ubuntu iso tomorrow and see what happens with that. thanks for the response.
As title says, my utorrent keeps freezing. No matter the amount of torrents active, ONLY freeze when downloading tho. It freezes for 10 sec, works 20 sec, freeze 30 sec. So its just random. Worked fine yesterday, reinstalled pc, all windows updates, drivers etc installed. Same windows copy and drivers except for gpu.
Tried downloading to different disks, 2 different ssds and 2 different hdd. Yesterday I had no issues at 100mb/s downloads, now the issues is at any download speed, at 6mb/s+ it happens more frequently.
I doubt it since you been upgrading utorrent the setting will have changed so this "all settings is the same" isn't correct here. I am one of those whom uses a older same ut time and time again with same settings and have no freeze or stops or major lags. I think your getting hammered with fake torrents which causing your problems and not something attributed to utorrent software itself. So here a test stop all torrents and use my download link for "slackware" and download just that and see what happens then we will know what if there is any download problems on utorrent side.
Since one is not willing to back track problems then this issue is mute. I always get a good laugh when lines like "been working fine till now" but there is no one else to confirm - this tells there was always problems. utorrent can't do anything about trackers and how they are configured - got problem then you need to contact where your getting your torrents from. 2ff7e9595c
